Will it Make the Boat Go Faster?

I still remember the six of us sitting around the campfire under a million Algonquin stars. We’d paddled miles that day, navigated a particularly brutal spat of white-water that by all good sense we should have portaged and then celebrated the fact that we lived through it with the hilarity, beer and crazy conversations only good friends can have.

A God Among Slugs

I really, really, really wanted to post my video of
the "Penis Dance" as performed by Oz. As you
can see, I did not win that argument.

There is nothing in the world more delicious than that moment when your head plunges below the surface of a cold, freshwater lake. The smell of the water, the complete and utter silence that overtakes you, the lack of gravity tying you down. It's a feeling like no other. That moment in time is pure ecstasy.

Better than the best orgasm you'll ever have.

Скажи мне, что ты хочешь, и я скажу, кто ты...

** (Full quote in English at the bottom).

It's pandemic time and I'm bored so I've been reading (and re-reading) many of the Russian literature greats that were such a staple of my university years. This line from Chekhov really jumped out at me today. "Tell me what you want and I will tell you who you are." At a time when so many of us are spending most of our time alone in a world gone quiet, I thought it was a really interesting idea to reflect on.

When you are exiled by circumstance,
only the exile is legible to others:
your body, your illness, your employment status,
your poverty, your citizenship or lack thereof.

Roots for the Ground and Wings for the Sky

I didn't sleep well Sunday night. This is unusual for me - I can pretty much sleep anywhere, any time. But Sunday night sleep wouldn't come.

It wasn't until I was on my way to work Monday morning and heard the morning team announce that it was February 3, that I finally understood my restlessness. The night of February 2, 1988 is forever etched into my subconscious, and although I rarely think about it and no longer harbour the fear and grief from that time in my life, it's a date that sticks.
